Amazon has confirmed that it is evaluating the possibility of producing a reboot of the reality show The Apprentice, which was hosted by current U.S. president Donald Trump from 2004 to 2015 on NBC.
“Since our acquisition of MGM, we have had preliminary internal discussions about what comes next for The Apprentice as a property,” an Amazon spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal, noting that the project has not yet been confirmed.
Trump and his family have not yet been consulted, but reportedly Donald Trump Jr. is being considered to lead the reboot and carry on his father’s legacy as the show’s host.
The series featured contestants competing to work for the Trump Organization. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Trump family co-owns the intellectual property of The Apprentice.
Trump left the reality show to begin his first presidential campaign in 2015. Arnold Schwarzenegger took over as host for the show’s final season.
However, after Trump said that immigrants were criminals, NBC stated that it would never again allow Trump to host any program on the network, regardless of the election outcome.
“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to Donald Trump’s recent derogatory statements about immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” the network said in a statement.
“To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC. Additionally, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not participate in The Celebrity Apprentice on NBC. Celebrity Apprentice is licensed by United Artists Media Group of Mark Burnett, and that relationship will continue.”
